Pilot Port Quick Test

The AIS Pilot Plug is mandatory on all ships with an AIS Class A Installation according to IMO Circ/SN 227.

Selling our Pilot Plug interfaces to maritime pilots all over the world, we hear that sometimes the Pilot Port is in-operatible due to faulty cabling. Quite often the the cables on the plug have the wrong polarity or are changed between TX and RX.

This happens during installation of the AIS Installation because the technician can only verify the correct operation of the transponder, but not the correct operation of the pilot plug because he normally has neither an interface cable nor a PC with AIS-compatible charting software.

To tackle this problem, we have developed and patented a small and affordable Pilot Port Tester. This device consists of a Pilot Plug with integrated testing electronic and is specially targeted at those who install AIS units onboard and at Port State Control Officers. The unit is designed to test for faults on the transmitting side, the side relevant for pilots to receive correct data. For pilots we have developed the Pilot Port Detangler which will rectify most of the installation faults.

A two-colour LED on the rear of the plug indicates whether the wiring is correct or faulty - and even indicates which cables are installed wrongly.
